The first six months of your baby's life are filled with extraordinary little discoveries!

From that first intentional smile to reaching for a favourite toy, every week brings something new.

Your baby is constantly learning. Watching, listening, touching, moving and gradually discovering how the world works.

And one of the most important ways babies learn? Through play!

Let's explore the key stages of baby development from birth to six months, discover simple activities you can enjoy together and see how carefully chosen, age-appropriate toys can encourage your baby's natural development.

0–3 Months: Perceive & Discover 👶

A Brand-New World of Sensory Experiences

Your newborn enters the world ready to experience sights, sounds, touch and movement. During the first three months, their ability to process and respond to these experiences develops remarkably quickly.

👀 Vision – Learning to See

At birth, babies see best at close distances, approximately the distance between your face and theirs when you're holding them.

Strong visual contrasts, particularly black and white, are especially interesting during these early weeks.

Gradually, babies begin focusing on familiar faces and following slowly moving objects with their eyes.

Play idea: Hold a black-and-white contrast card where your baby can comfortably see it. Slowly move it and give your little one time to observe.

👂 Hearing – Discovering Sounds

Babies recognise familiar voices and become increasingly interested in sounds around them.

A gentle rattle or crinkly fabric toy can capture their attention and encourage early listening skills.

Play idea: Gently shake a rattle beside your baby and watch for signs that they notice or turn towards the sound.

✋ Touch & Grasping – Discovering Little Hands

During the earliest weeks, hand movements are largely reflexive. Gradually, babies begin opening their hands more often, touching objects and developing greater control over their movements.

Different materials, such as soft fabric, smooth wood and flexible silicone, offer interesting tactile experiences.

Play idea: Let your baby touch a soft sensory cloth or explore an age-appropriate grasping toy with your help.

💪 Movement – Getting Stronger Every Day

During the first few months, babies gradually develop better head and neck control.

Supervised tummy time while awake provides valuable opportunities to practise lifting the head and developing early motor skills.

Play idea: Place a high-contrast card in front of your baby during tummy time to give them something interesting to look at.

Baby Box 0–3 Months: Your Baby's First Developmental Toys

Choosing toys for a newborn can be surprisingly challenging.

Which toys are suitable? What will your baby actually enjoy? And which toys provide meaningful developmental experiences?

The Baby Box 0–3 Months “Perceive & Discover” was developed in collaboration with child development experts to make those choices easier.

It contains 7 carefully selected developmental toys designed for babies from birth to approximately three months:

  • Black-and-white high-contrast cards for early visual exploration.

  • A soft crinkle cloth encouraging touch and listening.

  • A wooden grasping toy with a removable fabric cat for tactile discovery.

  • A flexible silicone grasping ball for little hands to explore.

  • A hand and foot rattle that connects movement with sound.

4–6 Months: Discover & Understand 🌈

From Watching the World to Actively Exploring It!

Around four months, something exciting begins to happen.

Your baby is no longer content just watching everything around them. They want to participate!

They begin reaching more purposefully, exploring objects with their hands and mouth, following movements and discovering that their actions can make things happen.

✋ Purposeful Grasping – I Want to Hold It!

Babies become increasingly skilled at reaching for and holding objects.

Over time, they also begin exploring toys with both hands and transferring objects from one hand to the other.

Play idea: Offer a lightweight textured ball or an easy-to-hold grasping toy and allow your baby to explore it.

🧠 Cause & Effect – Look What I Did!

One of the most fascinating developments during this period is the beginning of cause-and-effect learning.

Shake a rattle and it makes a sound. Touch a wobbling toy and it moves!

These simple experiences help babies begin connecting their actions with what happens around them.

Play idea: Show your baby how a wobbling toy moves when touched, then give them an opportunity to experiment.

👀 Hand-Eye Coordination – See, Reach, Grasp

Your baby gradually becomes better at coordinating what they see with how they move their hands.

Soft balls are particularly useful for early reaching, rolling and visual tracking games.

Play idea: Slowly roll a soft ball in front of your baby and encourage them to follow its movement with their eyes.

🖐️ Sensory Exploration – Every Texture Is a Discovery

Soft, smooth, bumpy, crinkly!

Babies increasingly use their hands and mouths to explore objects and discover different textures.

Sensory fabric books with varied materials and gentle sounds provide wonderful opportunities for exploration.

Play idea: Open an accordion-style sensory book in front of your baby and let them explore the pictures, textures and sounds.

Baby Box 4–6 Months: The Next Stage of Discovery

As your baby's skills develop, their play experiences can become more varied and interactive.

The Baby Box 4–6 Months “Discover & Understand” has been created specifically for this exciting stage.

It includes 6 carefully selected developmental toys:

  • A wobbling squirrel toy encouraging early cause-and-effect discovery.

  • An accordion sensory book with different fabrics and crinkly elements.

  • A textured sensory ball for grasping and tactile exploration.

  • A wooden grasping toy made from FSC® 100% certified wood.

  • A soft plush ball for early rolling and movement games.

  • A lightweight plush ring with an integrated rattle combining movement and sound.

Together, these toys encourage purposeful grasping, sensory exploration, hand-eye coordination and early cognitive skills.

Just like the 0–3 months Baby Box, this set also includes an expert-developed guide with play ideas and helpful information about developmental stages.

Does Your Baby Really Need Lots of Toys?

The simple answer is no!

Babies don't need a room overflowing with toys or constant entertainment.

What they need are opportunities to observe, move, experiment and interact with the people who care for them.

A single well-chosen toy can offer different learning experiences as your baby grows.

Take a rattle, for example.

At first, your newborn may simply enjoy listening to its gentle sound. A few months later, they may reach for it, grasp it and proudly discover how to make the sound themselves!

It's not about the number of toys. It's about offering appropriate, meaningful opportunities for exploration.

This is the philosophy behind the two Baby Boxes.

Instead of randomly collecting baby toys, each box brings together complementary play experiences suited to a particular stage of development.

5 Simple Ways to Encourage Your Baby's Development Through Play

1. Talk, sing and respond.

Your voice is one of your baby's favourite sounds! Talk about what you're doing, sing familiar songs and respond when your baby makes little noises.

2. Make time for floor play.

Create a comfortable, safe space where your baby can move freely and explore. Include supervised tummy time while awake.

3. Give your baby time to try.

Rather than always placing a toy directly into your baby's hand, allow opportunities to reach for it independently.

4. Follow your baby's cues.

If your little one turns away, becomes fussy or loses interest, it may be time for a break. Play should be enjoyable, not overwhelming.

5. Enjoy the connection.

Not every activity needs a developmental goal. Smiles, cuddles, eye contact and shared laughter are valuable experiences in themselves.

Remember: Every Baby Develops at Their Own Pace

Developmental milestones are helpful guides, not strict deadlines.

Some babies acquire particular skills earlier, while others take a little longer.

If you have questions about your baby's development, your paediatrician can provide individual guidance.

Developmental toys create opportunities to practise emerging skills, but there's no need to rush or push a baby towards milestones before they're ready.

The First Six Months Are Just the Beginning! 💛

From the first time your newborn notices a black-and-white card to the exciting moment they grasp and shake a rattle independently, every little discovery represents a big step.

The Baby Boxes 0–3 Months and 4–6 Months bring together 13 thoughtfully selected developmental toys and two helpful parent guides, covering two consecutive stages of early development.

Two boxes, countless opportunities to play, explore and enjoy precious moments together.

Because the best discoveries are the ones you make together. 🤍
